Crisis Informatics

Crisis informatics concerns itself with the extended social arena of disaster response to account for the information space that spans preparation, warning, response and recovery. The "information arena" of disaster varies by the spatial, temporal and subsequent social arrangements of the hazard upon a built environment (Palen and Liu, 2007), and such arrangements have distinct implications for technology implementation and deployment. Crisis informatics strives for socially- and behaviorally-informed development of ICT for crisis situations. Additionally, the extended social arena of disaster response is widening in the presence of pervasive information technology, and has significant consequences on emergency management practice, structures and policy.

OUR Mission

This is a site generated by members of the connectivIT Lab and the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado at Boulder.  This is an evolving website that began in January of 2007 with a longterm objective of helping researchers and technologists who are interested in studying, building, and deploying Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for disasters.
